Mark Carney thanks Volodymyr Zelenskyy for meeting him in Canada at “this crucial moment in the peace process”.
“We have the conditions, the possibility, for the just and lasting peace,” he says.
But he adds that this requires a “willing Russia”, who he condemns for a “barbaric” overnight attack on Ukraine’s capital city.
Zelenskyy agrees it was a “very difficult” night for Kyiv and says that the strikes are “Russia’s answer to our peace efforts”.
“This shows that Putin doesn’t want peace,” he adds. “We want peace. He’s a man of war.”
Carney then announces further economic assistance for Ukraine in the form of $2.5bn (£1.35bn). This will help Ukraine unlock financing from the
International Monetary Fund, Carney said.
Zelenskyy says he will speak with European allies later today and says hopes to have a “very important” and “very constructive” meeting with Donald Trump tomorrow.
