US intelligence assessed Maduro allies were best placed to lead government after him

Donald Trump is still talking, but here’s some more news to bring you…

Our US partner network NBC News reports that a classified intelligence assessment said that top members of Nicolas Maduro’s regime were best positioned to lead a Venezuelan government after him.

Citing a US official, it reports they believed this was the best way to maintain stability after its military action.

This included Delcy Rodriguez, who was sworn in as the new president of the country yesterday, NBC says.

It adds that this assessment was a factor in Trump’s administration not backing Nobel Peace Prize winner Maria Corina Machado’s opposition.

The Wall Street Journal also reported on the assessment.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt didn’t comment directly on the assessment but told NBC: “President Trump is routinely briefed on domestic political dynamics all over the world.

“The president and his national security team are making realistic decisions to finally ensure Venezuela aligns with the interests of the United States, and becomes a better country for the Venezuelan people.”
