Chinese foreign minister's India visit making Pakistan uncomfortable? Islamabad plays 'friendship' card

Chinese foreign minister’s India visit making Pakistan uncomfortable? Islamabad plays ‘friendship’ card

Even as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s ongoing visit to India is seen as part of the efforts to rebuild the relationship and trust which came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020, Pakistan appeared to showcase how close its relationship with Beijing is.

During his meeting with NSA Ajit Doval, Wang said the Chinese side attaches great importance to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s upcoming visit to China to attend the SCO summit and pointed out that history and reality prove that a healthy and stable China-India relationship serves the fundamental and long-term interests of both of our countries.

“We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored on the borders. Mr Doval, I appreciate your effort that you made as special representative of the Indian side. Now the bilateral relationship is facing an important opportunity of improvement and growth,” the Chinese FM said.

While these statements seem to imply that there appears to be a thaw in the ties between the two countries, Pakistan found it necessary to play up its ‘All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership’ with China.

The Chinese FM is heading to Pakistan after his India trip.

Pakistan seemed to play up the special relationship it enjoys with China while welcoming Wang to the country, and pointed out that the two countries have “regular high-level exchanges.”

“On the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar … Mr Wang Yi is visiting Islamabad for co-chairing the sixth Pakistan-China Foreign Ministers’ Strategic Dialogue on August 21, 2025,” a statement from the foreign office of Pakistan said.

The statement further noted that the visit of Wang is part of the “regular high-level exchanges” between Pakistan and China to further deepen their ‘All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership’, reaffirm support on the issues of respective core interests, enhance economic and trade cooperation, and reaffirm their joint commitment to regional peace, development and stability.

The emphasis on trade cooperation between China and Pakistan comes even as China has agreed to ease restrictions to facilitate the supply of rare earth minerals and fertilisers to India.
