Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter, Princess Aiko, began a trip to Nagasaki Prefecture on Friday, mainly to mourn victims of the U.S. atomic bombing of the city of Nagasaki in the closing days of World War II.
The family is also scheduled to attend the National Cultural Festival, organized by the Cultural Affairs Agency and host prefecture.
It is Princess Aiko’s first visit to the prefecture and the first for the imperial couple since the emperor’s accession to the throne in May 2019.
