As Jamaicans brace for Hurricane Melissa, an author based in Kingston has said he was woken up overnight by the heavy rain.
“We’re getting the outer bands, we expect it to be a devastating hurricane,” Kwame McPherson told our presenter Matt Barbet.
“For a lot of people the concern is the flooding, we do have areas which are flood prone, especially Kingston.”
He explained that, for the time being, “no one should actually be outside because we had forewarning”.
“The government have been excellent and the agencies have been wonderful in terms of the information they’ve said,” he added.
McPherson also said Jamaicans are “cool, calm and collected” as they await the hurricane’s arrival.
“We have experienced hurricanes before, not this powerful, but I guess the experience of going through this… makes it easier in that sense to deal with,” he said.
“That experience teaches wisdom.”
