One aircraft was hit but remained flyable, and all US assets returned home safely. No American personnel were killed, though Trump said a few suffered minor injuries.<\/p>\n<p>Maduro and his wife were flown by helicopter to the USS Iwo Jima, where Maduro was photographed wearing a grey sweater, blindfolded and handcuffed. They were later flown to New York, where Maduro was filmed being walked through prison on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"34.634873323398\">\n<p>The pair face cocaine trafficking charges under an updated, 25-page indictment filed in the Southern District of New York by Trump-appointed attorney Jay Clayton. The indictment does not mention fentanyl, the synthetic opioid responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of Americans each year. Reporters on the ground in Caracas on Saturday said the streets were quiet and stores were largely closed, though state TV showed some people protesting in the streets. The country, one of the most violent in the world, is also besieged by criminal gangs, including the notorious Tren de Aragua.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"30\">\n<p>Trump said American oil companies &ndash; whose assets in Venezuela were seized and nationalised &ndash; would invest billions of dollars to upgrade the country&rsquo;s crumbling oil infrastructure, from which the US would harvest and sell vast quantities of oil.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re going to take a lot of money out so that we can take care of the country,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re in the oil business &hellip; We&rsquo;ll be selling large amounts of oil to other countries.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jobuzo.com\/en\/migrant-acquitted-in-first-trial-over-us-border-military-zones\/\" class=\"template-1\"><span class=\"cta\">News :<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">Migrant acquitted in first trial over US border military zones<\/span><\/a><\/div><p>Trump said he would prefer the US presence in Venezuela to be limited, but these things took time. He gave no indication on how long the US might &ldquo;run&rdquo; the country, and said he was not afraid to put boots on the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck Schumer, the leader of the Democrats in the Senate, said it was reckless for Trump to launch military action against another country without congressional approval and with no clear plan for what comes next.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;The idea that Trump plans to now run Venezuela should strike fear in the hearts of all Americans,&rdquo; Schumer said. &ldquo;The American people have seen this before and paid the devastating price.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"26\">\n<p>When reporters asked Trump about the US&rsquo;s past failed attempts at regime change, he said those occurred under different presidents. If he says he&rsquo;s serious about something, then he means it,&rdquo; Rubio said. &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t understand yet how they haven&rsquo;t figured this out.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth put it more bluntly. &ldquo;[Maduro] effed around, and he found out,&rdquo; Hegseth said. &ldquo;This is America First. This is peace through strength.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"32\">\n<h3><strong>International reaction<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Allies of Maduro, which include Russia, China, Iran and Cuba, denounced the US action, with Beijing saying it was &ldquo;deeply shocked and strongly condemns the US&rsquo;s blatant use of force against a sovereign state&rdquo;. His 2018 re-election was widely considered a sham because the main opposition parties were banned from participating. During the 2024 election, electoral authorities loyal to the ruling party declared him the winner hours after polls closed, but the opposition gathered overwhelming evidence that he lost by a more than 2-to-1 margin.<\/p>\n<p>In a demonstration of how polarising a figure Maduro is, people variously took to the streets to protest his capture and celebrate it.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The mood on the streets of Caracas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"33\">\n<p>At a protest in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, Mayor Carmen Melendez joined a crowd demanding Maduro&rsquo;s return.<\/p>\n<p>&ldquo;Maduro, hold on, the people are rising up!&rdquo; the crowd chanted. &ldquo;We are here, Nicol&aacute;s Maduro. If you can hear us, we are here!&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier, armed people and uniformed members of a civilian militia took to the streets of a Caracas neighbourhood long considered a stronghold of the ruling party. In other parts of the city, the streets remained empty hours after the attack, as residents absorbed events. Scared, like everyone,&rdquo; said Caracas resident Noris Prada, who sat on an empty avenue looking down at his phone. &ldquo;Venezuelans woke up scared, many families couldn&rsquo;t sleep.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"Hy4HP z5wPE\" data-testid=\"body-content\" readability=\"28\">\n<p>In the Chilean capital of Santiago, people waved Venezuelan flags and banged pots and pans as vehicles passed by honking at them.<\/p>\n<p>In Doral, Florida, home to the largest Venezuelan community in the US, people wrapped themselves in Venezuelan flags, ate fried snacks and cheered as music played. At one point, the crowd chanted &ldquo;Liberty! Liberty!
