ICE agents will have a security role at the Winter Olympics in Italy, it has been revealed, after the man who led the Trump administration’s crackdown in Minneapolis was moved out of the city. <\/p>\n

A Department for Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson confirmed agents would be attending the Milan Cortina Games – but insisted they would not be doing enforcement operations.<\/p>\n

“Obviously, ICE does not conduct immigration enforcement operations in foreign countries,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said.<\/p>\n

She added that ICE would be supporting the “host nation to vet and mitigate risks from transnational criminal organisations” and “all security operations remain under Italian authority”.<\/p>\n

It has, however, prompted outrage from inside Italy. Milan’s mayor, Giuseppe Sala, told RTL Radio 102 that the force would not be welcome in his city.<\/p>\n

He said: “This is a militia that kills, a militia that enters into the homes of people, signing their own permission slips. It is clear they are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt.”<\/p>\n

He added: “I wonder, Can we say no to Trump, just for once? ICE officers shouldn’t come to Italy because they are not aligned with our democratic way of managing security.”<\/p>\n

The development follows the removal of Gregory Bovino, who would be returning to a previous local position in El Centro, California, a senior White House official and Trump administration figure said.<\/p>\n

Sky’s US partner network, NBC News, reported some of Mr Bovino’s immigration enforcement agents would also depart Minneapolis on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Protesters assembled outside the hotel where he was reported to be staying on Monday night, facing off with federal officers.<\/p>\n
