US President Donald Trump resumed the naval blockade of Iranian ports on Tuesday and threatened new strikes on the country’s power plants and bridges if Tehran refuses to return to talks.<\/p>\n

The US also launched a new wave of strikes aimed at “continuing to degrade Iranian capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz,” the US military said.<\/p>\n

The moves mark a further escalation in the renewed confrontation between the US and Iran, which resumed hostilities last week and put a fragile June truce under mounting strain. Tehran says it has again shut the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global energy trade.<\/p>\n

“I’ll save the energy targets for last, but ultimately we’ll hit energy targets,” Trump told Fox News in an interview that aired Tuesday night on “Special Report with Bret Baier.”<\/p>\n

“Next week comes the power plants, next week comes the bridges,” Trump said, “unless they get to the table and negotiate.”<\/p>\n

Trump said US negotiators had contacted Iranian counterparts with a message that Tehran “better make a deal.”<\/p>\n

Iran, meanwhile, reported fresh attacks on US positions and facilities in Gulf countries. Its army said early on Wednesday that drones had been launched at US positions at Jordan’s Azraq base.<\/p>\n

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps separately said it struck weapons and storage facilities in Bahrain and Kuwait.<\/p>\n

The latest exchange of attacks has deepened uncertainty over the future of a memorandum of understanding signed last month, which had raised hopes of a more durable end to the fighting. The war has spread beyond Iran’s borders, drawn neighboring countries into the hostilities and disrupted international energy flows.<\/p>\n

In southern Iran, authorities reported US attacks at several locations near the Strait of Hormuz. American projectiles struck an area around Bandar Abbas, the provincial governor’s office told state media late on Tuesday. State news agency IRNA separately reported a strike near Sirik.<\/p>\n

“If the US thinks that by tightening its measures against us, its military actions and its economic blockade, we will return to negotiations, it is making a mistake,” Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said in an earlier interview with state television.<\/p>\n

Roughly a fifth of global oil and gas shipments moved through the Strait of Hormuz each day before the war erupted in February, underscoring the wider economic stakes of the renewed fighting.<\/p>\n

Trump had proposed on Monday imposing a 20% charge on ships using the waterway, prompting sharp criticism from the UN shipping agency and others. By Tuesday, he had dropped the proposal and said he would pursue investment agreements with Gulf countries instead, though he offered few details.<\/p>\n

The reinstated US naval blockade, covering vessels traveling to and from Iranian ports and coastal areas, took effect at 8 p.m. GMT on Tuesday. The measure had been suspended in June.<\/p>\n

Trump said vessels from other countries remained free to use the strait, with the restrictions applying to Iranian shipping. More than 20 US Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft are now deployed across the region, according to the US military.<\/p>\n

At home, the war has become increasingly politically costly for Trump as gasoline prices rise and November’s congressional elections draw closer.<\/p>\n

Benchmark Brent crude has surged 15% in the past seven days to $85 a barrel, its highest since mid-June.<\/p>\n
