But to De Kai, a pioneering machine learning scientist and advocate for AI ethics, this framing fundamentally misunderstands the technology.<\/div>\n<div data-qa=\"InlineAdSlot-Container\" class=\"css-zl1inp e11v3ui14\">\n<div class=\"e11v3ui10 e11v3ui13 css-y2bwcc e1flwkbl0\" data-qa=\"AdSlot-Container\">\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">&ldquo;I would prefer to think about it as the AI climate change challenge,&rdquo; De Kai said in an interview with the Post at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, where he is a professor of computer science and engineering. &ldquo;Literally, AI is a change to the [social] climate that humanity is competing in.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">De Kai, whose surname is Wu but who professionally goes by only his given name, has spent four decades at the forefront of AI research, going back to his work in natural language processing during his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley, in the early 1980s. His new book, <em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component-1\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Raising AI: An Essential Guide to Parenting Our Future<\/em>, released on June 3, argues that living with AI requires a paradigm shift &ndash; one in which people &ldquo;parent&rdquo; these systems as if they were their children.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">&ldquo;What&rsquo;s the single thing in folks&rsquo; lives that makes them most want to become better versions of themselves?&rdquo; De Kai writes. &ldquo;<em data-qa=\"ContentSchemaRender-defaultRenderMapFunctions-Component-1\" class=\"css-1mniedq ex3nmsa15\">Having kids<\/em>, most grown folks say.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Since AI is learning by absorbing everything we do and say online, we need to be conscientious about who we are around our AI &ldquo;children&rdquo;, the argument goes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"image-inline-container e1a5rv550 css-1llrc1m e1yqhwb40\" data-qa=\"Component-renderMap-StyledDiv\">\n<div class=\"image-inline caption e1fvabeq0 css-19sk4h4 ea9pn0s0\" data-qa=\"Component-Container\">\n<figure class=\"image-inline caption ea9pn0s1 css-1qeofuq e1gf69pb0\" data-qa=\"ArticleImage-ArticleImageContainer\">\n<div data-qa=\"ArticleImage-handleRenderImage-ImageContainer\" class=\"css-0 e1gf69pb3\">\n<\/div><figcaption data-qa=\"ArticleImage-DescriptionContainer\" class=\"css-6potyr e1gf69pb1\">De Kai&rsquo;s book Raising AI makes an argument for treating AI as children that must be parented by good role models.
