A teenage girl who was sexually exploited by her biological father for more than three years finally mustered up the courage to tell her mother about the abuse.<\/p>\n

When the woman confronted the man, he callously retorted that “it takes two hands to clap”, showing no remorse, prosecutors told the High Court.<\/p>\n

The victim’s mother divorced the man following the revelations.<\/p>\n

On Sept 12, the 40-year-old man pleaded guilty to two charges of sexual penetration of a minor under 16, and two charges of exploitative sexual penetration of a minor between 16 and 18.<\/p>\n

Nine other charges for sex offences he committed against the victim will be taken into consideration when he is sentenced at a later date.<\/p>\n

The prosecution sought a sentence of at least 18 to 19½ years’ jail and 16 strokes of the cane.<\/p>\n

Justice Dedar Singh Gill asked for further submissions on whether abuse of trust could be considered an aggravating factor for the exploitative sexual penetration charges, after defence counsel Raphael Louis argued that this amounted to double counting.<\/p>\n

The victim’s parents married in 2009, after the girl was born out of wedlock in 2003. The couple had two sons after their marriage.<\/p>\n

The victim was raised by her grandmother, who pretended to be her mother, while her parents pretended that they were her siblings.<\/p>\n

She eventually learnt the truth when she was in primary school, after chancing upon her birth certificate.<\/p>\n

Deputy Public Prosecutor Phoebe Tan told the court that in mid-2017, the victim’s mother discovered text messages between the girl, who was then 13, and her former boyfriend.<\/p>\n

The victim’s father confronted the girl, but then pivoted to asking her to demonstrate on him what she had done with her former boyfriend, and persuaded her to kiss him.<\/p>\n

Over the next three years, up until September 2020, the man’s sexual advances escalated to touching her inappropriately and engaging in various penetrative sexual acts with her.<\/p>\n

He would usually enter her bedroom when the family was asleep, close the door behind him, and engage in the sexual activities with her.<\/p>\n

At one point, she wrote him a letter asking him to stop what he was doing to her.<\/p>\n

In the letter, she asked her father if he ever cared about her feelings, and said he always lied that he would stop engaging in sexual activities with her but never did.<\/p>\n

The acts stopped for a while after the man got the letter, but resumed afterwards.<\/p>\n

On Aug 23, 2020, when the victim was 16, she had sex with her husband before he left for work. It was not specified in court when she got married.<\/p>\n

After her husband left, her father entered her bedroom and had sex with her. She implored him to stop and suggested another sex act so that he would end what he was doing.<\/p>\n

On the night of Aug 31, 2020, the man started punching and kicking the walls of the flat after he found her bedroom door locked.<\/p>\n

DPP Tan said the man was angry that the victim was not paying more attention to him.<\/p>\n

The next day, he tried to touch her, but she pushed his hand away.<\/p>\n

The man later threatened to tell her husband about their sexual activities. The victim then decided to tell her mother what her father had done.<\/p>\n

“The accused told the victim’s mother that it takes two hands to clap, implying that the victim was also to blame for their sexual relationship, after which he left the house,” said DPP Tan.<\/p>\n

The victim also told her husband that she had been raped by her father. Her husband called the police, and her father was arrested on the same day after he surrendered himself.<\/p>\n

When he was charged in 2021, the man faced 14 charges, including one for rape and one for aggravated rape. The prosecution offered the man a plea deal, but after initially accepting the offer, he changed his mind and said he wanted to claim trial.<\/p>\n

After rounds of to-and-fro, the rape charges were reduced to charges for exploitative sexual penetration of a minor, while one charge of outrage of modesty was withdrawn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
