{"id":9096,"date":"2025-10-20T13:37:50","date_gmt":"2025-10-20T13:37:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jobuzo.com\/en\/rare-reptiles-seized-as-nparks-cracks-down-on-illegal-wildlife-trade\/"},"modified":"2025-10-20T13:37:50","modified_gmt":"2025-10-20T13:37:50","slug":"rare-reptiles-seized-as-nparks-cracks-down-on-illegal-wildlife-trade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jobuzo.com\/en\/rare-reptiles-seized-as-nparks-cracks-down-on-illegal-wildlife-trade\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare reptiles seized as NParks cracks down on illegal wildlife trade"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div readability=\"105\">\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Endangered animals, including a leopard tortoise and a spiny-tailed monitor lizard, were seized in raids on Oct 9 by the National Parks Board (NParks) as part of efforts to stop the illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In a statement on Oct 20, NParks said that the island-wide raids targeted people suspected of illegally trading wildlife through online platforms, including messaging app Telegram.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Six premises were raided and 16 wildlife specimens were seized, it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Among them were two species of lizard &ndash; yellow-headed day geckos and an Argentine black-and-white tegu.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The animals are currently being housed and cared for at NParks&rsquo; Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation in Lim Chu Kang.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Investigations are ongoing, and the people involved have been interviewed in connection with illegal wildlife sales, NParks said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jobuzo.com\/en\/12-weeks-jail-for-school-it-support-technician-who-took-upskirt-videos-of-teachers\/\" class=\"template-1\"><span class=\"cta\">News :<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">&lt;div&gt;12 weeks' jail for school IT support technician who took upskirt videos of teachers&lt;\/div&gt;<\/span><\/a><\/div><p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&ldquo;These enforcement efforts complement NParks&rsquo; border surveillance operations by extending the fight against illegal wildlife trade into domestic physical and online marketplaces,&rdquo; it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">NParks added that through regular monitoring and targeted actions, it ensures that offenders are held accountable across all fronts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In 2023, checks by The Straits Times uncovered six Telegram groups illegally peddling more than 35 species as pets. The largest group had 16,000 members.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">NParks also announced that, together with the Commercial Affairs Department of the Singapore Police Force (SPF) and the Attorney-General&rsquo;s Chambers (AGC), it was jointly awarded the Asia Environmental Enforcement Recognition of Excellence on Oct 17.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Coordinated by the United Nations Environment Programme, the award recognised the cross-agency collaboration between NParks, SPF, AGC and the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation-South African Police Services in a case involving Singapore&rsquo;s largest-ever seizure of rhinoceros horns, valued at over S$1.2 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">NParks and airport security intercepted 20 pieces of rhinoceros horns weighing over 34kg at Changi Airport in October 2022, with support from dogs of NParks&rsquo; K9 Unit.<\/p>\n<div class=\"internal-linking-related-contents\"><a href=\"https:\/\/jobuzo.com\/en\/migrant-acquitted-in-first-trial-over-us-border-military-zones\/\" class=\"template-1\"><span class=\"cta\">News :<\/span><span class=\"postTitle\">Migrant acquitted in first trial over US border military zones<\/span><\/a><\/div><p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The horns were discovered in baggage belonging to South African Gumede Sthembiso Joel, who was travelling from South Africa to Laos through Singapore. He was arrested, and the rhinoceros horns were seized by NParks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">Rhinoceros horns carry a high trade value and are treasured for their use in Chinese medicine and ornamentals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">The man was sentenced in January 2024 to two years&rsquo; jail after earlier pleading guilty to two charges under the Endangered Species (Import and Export) Act.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">In the statement on Oct 20, Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development Alvin Tan congratulated NParks and its partners, saying the award recognises NParks&rsquo; firm commitment to tackling the illegal wildlife trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">He noted that the offender&rsquo;s two-year imprisonment is the heaviest sentence meted out in Singapore to date for a case involving the smuggling of wildlife parts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-secondary text-18 font-normal leading-1.5 text-grayscale-800\">&ldquo;This underscores the importance of our whole-of-Government approach and international cooperation in combating illegal wildlife trade,&rdquo; he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"article-image -mx-lg mb-md mt-lg\">\n<figure><figcaption id=\"figcaption\"><span>Seized rhinoceros horns in October 2022.
