As Jamaicans brace for Hurricane Melissa, an author based in Kingston has said he was woken up overnight by the heavy rain.<\/p>\n

“We’re getting the outer bands, we expect it to be a devastating hurricane,” Kwame McPherson told our presenter Matt Barbet.<\/p>\n

“For a lot of people the concern is the flooding, we do have areas which are flood prone, especially Kingston.”<\/p>\n

He explained that, for the time being, “no one should actually be outside because we had forewarning”.<\/p>\n

“The government have been excellent and the agencies have been wonderful in terms of the information they’ve said,” he added.<\/p>\n

McPherson also said Jamaicans are “cool, calm and collected” as they await the hurricane’s arrival.<\/p>\n

“We have experienced hurricanes before, not this powerful, but I guess the experience of going through this… makes it easier in that sense to deal with,” he said.<\/p>\n

“That experience teaches wisdom.”<\/p>\n
