Penguin Random House UK is implementing an ambitious data strategy to help drive its commercial and business objectives. This has been backed by a significant investment in technology, where we have gone cloud first in embracing the Modern Data Stack to renew our entire data platform.

We’ve also upgraded our team, with an influx of talent to harness these tools to take us where we need to be. That’s why we now need you…

You’ll be part of our Data Centre of Excellence, working alongside specialist pillars delivering data engineering and data governance for the entire organisation. The critical Visualisation pillar you will lead is where data gets in front of the business decision makers so it’s a vital function within this team to provide traction across every department to deliver the strategy.

You’ll develop effective relationships with senior stakeholders across our organisation to understand what drives value in each operation, demonstrating to each business function the potential to use data visualisation to make better decisions that enhance their performance. You’ll also play a key role in existing strategic projects that are delivering our migration from Business Objects to Power BI and delivering a SAP bridge into Snowflake for better financial analysis and reporting.

You’ll be leading, managing and developing a team of 8 data modellers and report developers working mostly in Power BI but also overseeing the existing Business Objects portfolio. You’ll play a key role in driving our Penguin Random House data strategy and continuing to align that to our overall business strategy that champions brilliant voices from across the globe, bringing their stories and ideas to audiences everywhere.

Some of our key responsibilities include:

  • Being a visible leader and forming effective, productive relationships with key stakeholders across all areas of the organisation – at least half of your time should be spent working with consumers across the organisation.

  • Acting as an evangelist, helping key stakeholders understand how data visualisation can be used to drive better, faster decisions in their areas.

  • Translating business strategies and commercial priorities into a backlog of supporting developments for our visualisation tools.

  • Supporting the Director of Data to create, maintain and drive the Penguin Random House Data strategy.

  • Working closely with our Data Engineering and Data Architecture teams to ensure our data platform develops to support the visualisation roadmap.

  • Instilling a Dev/DataOps culture and working practices into the Data Visualisation team.

  • Initiating and overseeing appropriate initiatives to deliver a continuously improving, robust and scalable service that meets customer and business needs.

To succeed in this role, you will:

  • Be the “voice of the consumer”, ensuring our visualisation technology strategy and service roadmap is driven by business need and value prioritsation.

  • Inspire and guide the Data Community across Penguin Random House to want and to be able to represent more information in this way – your influence stretches far beyond the Data team.

  • Have relevant experience of the capabilities of visualisation tools to be able to guide consumers and develop colleagues on the “art of the possible”.

  • Have relevant technical experience of methods of data processing, data models and data infrastructure.

  • Be confident and self-motivated, energetic and engaging and most importantly passionate about data.

  • Have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to be able to liaise and influence effectively with all levels of management and business areas.

  • Be comfortable building and maintaining strong relationships with many stakeholders and colleagues.

If you’re up for the challenge and have what it takes, please apply by Sunday 19th February. All interviews will be held virtually.

Salary: Circa £90,000 depending on how your skills and experience align to the role, plus benefits.

We’re currently experimenting with hybrid working and involving colleagues across the business to shape our future ways of working. The needs of our teams and individuals are different, so we’re not taking a one-size-fits-all approach. While our offices are places to connect, collaborate and celebrate with colleagues, we recognise that flexibility about where you work is just as important for doing your best work and for your wellbeing.

For this role, there are meetings and activities that you will need to attend in person, mainly at our offices in London. The exact balance of office to remote working will depend on the nature of your role and team needs, and we are open to discussing this through the recruitment process.

Our employees are the heart of our business. We have a range of benefits to reflect our commitment to our employees, some of which are:

  • 27 days paid holiday entitlement in year one (plus bank holidays), increasing a day each year up to 30 days
  • Medical cover
  • Life assurance
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Discounted gym membership
  • Generous pension scheme
  • Summer working hours (role dependent)
  • Volunteering policy and charity matching
  • Employee Assistance programme
  • Mentoring programme
  • Extended gender neutral parental leave
  • Access to books and eBooks across Penguin Random House UK
  • Each site has trained mental health first aiders
  • We plant a tree for every new employee to our business

Our creativity is inspired by different perspectives, so we want our culture to be one of belonging, where everyone feels welcome and where differences are celebrated.

This is where disabled applicants who meet the essential criteria for the role can opt in to get to the next recruitment stage.
