Act in 24 hours: Osman Hadi ally warns Muhammad Yunus-led interim govt at Saturday funeral

Slain Inquilab Mancha leader Sharif Osman Hadi was laid to rest on Saturday with full state honours at the Bangladesh Parliament’s South Plaza.

Ahead of the funeral prayers for the radical leader behind the ouster of ex-PM Sheikh Hasina, party secretary Abdullah Al Jaber issued a 24-hour ultimatum, demanding that the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government make serious progress in the investigation into Hadi’s death.

Calling out Home Affairs Advisor Jahangir Alam Chowdhury and the Yunus aide Khoda Baksh Chowdhury, he demanded that they brief the public on what steps had been taken within 24 hours, criticising the authorities for failing to bring the shooters to justice more than a week after Hadi’s death.

“Why have we come here? We have come here to avenge our brother,” he said in his speech, later urging party supporters not to respond to any calls for violence, as per a Financial Express Bangladesh report.

He also urged people to gather at Shahbagh after the funeral.

“Dear Osman Hadi, we have not come here to say goodbye. As long as Bangladesh exists, you will remain an inseparable part of this nation,” Yunus had said, at the funeral.

The radical leader’s death has sent shockwaves through Bangladesh, with the students who led the violent July 2024 protests back onto the streets again—this time as an organised political party under the banner of the National Citizen Party (NCP)—joined by cadres of other political parties, demanding justice for Hadi.

He had been shot by unidentified assailants in Dhaka on December 12 in Dhaka’s Bijoy Nagar area, and was later transferred to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The attack comes months ahead of the polls—specifically, a day after Dhaka’s Election Commission announced that the 13th parliamentary election would be held on February 12, 2026.
