Alibaba previews Qwen3.8, claiming its strength trails only Anthropic’s Fable 5

Alibaba Group Holding has previewed its next-generation artificial intelligence model Qwen3.8, which the company says is “second only” to Anthropic’s Claude Fable 5.
Qwen3.8-Max-Preview, the preview version of the strongest model of the Qwen family, had been made available on Alibaba’s Token Plan subscription service, as well as its Qoder and QoderWork agentic platforms, the Chinese tech giant said on an official X post on Sunday.

With 2.4 trillion parameters, it was “one of the most powerful models available today, comparable to leading frontier AI models, second only to Fable 5”, Alibaba said on the post, referring to Anthropic’s most capable widely released model to date.

Parameters are a machine-learning measure of AI system complexity, with higher figures generally indicating stronger models.

The announcement, made during the country’s top AI summit, the World AI Conference (WAIC) in Shanghai, underscored how Chinese AI developers have entered the “multi-trillion parameter” age.
