Posted on 17 December 2025 By jobuzo

Thank you for following our live coverage of the aftermath of the antisemitic terror attack in Bondi Beach.

Today, thousands attended a memorial held for the victims.

The attack took place on Sunday, with 50-year-old Sajid Akram, who was killed by police, and his 24-year-old son, Naveed, who woke up today from a coma in hospital, accused of carrying out the shooting.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described the attackers as being motivated by Islamic State ideology.

At least 15 people were killed, with several still in hospital in a critical condition.

Heroic bystanders tried to intervene, but a married couple were killed as they tried to stop one gunman, while a local shop owner survived after disarming one attacker, but was shot twice.

Suspects travelled to Philippines month before attack

The two suspects travelled to the Philippines for almost the entire month of November, before Sunday’s attack.

Our Asia correspondent Cordelia Lynch said the duo arrived on 1 November and left on 28 November.

Sajid used an Indian passport to travel, while Naveed used an Australian one, and their declared destination was Davao City – an area associated with Islamic extremism.

Memorial held in Bondi

Today, thousands turned out at a memorial in Bondi.

Some family members of the victims spoke, with the father of Matilda, a 10-year-old girl who was the youngest victim, saying:

“I just wanted to say a couple of words about Matilda and what a beautiful person she is… we named her Matilda because she was our firstborn in Australia. We came her from Ukraine… remember her, remember her name.”

Meanwhile, the Australian government has come under pressure for its handling of previous antisemitic events.

It has said it intends to tighten already strict gun laws in an effort to avoid a repeat of the attack.
