Authorities seize illegally imported fresh produce from Malaysia at Woodlands Checkpoint

Posted on 25 July 2025 By jobuzo

Around three tonnes of fresh produce illegally imported from Malaysia were seized at Woodlands Checkpoint during a joint operation on July 24 and 25.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) and the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said in a joint statement on July 25 that under-declared vegetables were discovered in a delivery truck and seized.

The vegetables included eggplants, cucumbers and long beans.

The joint operation was conducted on delivery trucks that normally transport fresh produce for direct distribution to retailers and consumers, said the two agencies.

ICA officers at Woodlands Checkpoint had noticed discrepancies in the shipments carried by one truck and referred the vehicle to SFA for checks.

SFA investigations are ongoing.

Food imports to Singapore must meet SFA requirements, and can be brought in only by licensed importers. The shipment must be declared and come with a valid import permit.

Illegally imported produce can pose food safety risks, said the agencies.

Those convicted of illegally importing fresh vegetables face a maximum fine of $10,000 and up to three years’ jail.
