City Square Mall shops reopen after burst pipe floods basement with brown liquid

Posted on 4 September 2025 By jobuzo

Business was largely back to normal at City Square Mall on the morning of Sept 4 after a sprinkler pipe burst the previous evening.

Most shops at basement one and all outlets at basement two are open for business as usual, the mall’s spokesperson said in a media reply on Sept 4.

“Efforts are underway to reinstate two affected units as quickly as possible to minimise disruption to our tenants’ businesses,” the spokesperson said.

The incident occurred at about 7.40pm on Sept 3, when the mall was alerted to the burst pipe. Within minutes, its operations and security teams redirected shoppers from the area, while cleaners were deployed to carry out cleaning works.

According to City Square Mall’s Facebook page, the mall normally closes at 10pm.

“The operations team is working closely with all relevant parties to investigate the cause and carry out rectification works,” the spokesperson added.

The burst pipe released a dark-coloured liquid, sending patrons scurrying away as they tried to avoid being sprayed. Videos on social media showed diners at fast-food chain KFC, located at basement one, abandoning their meals to avoid the liquid pooling on the floor.

Parts of the underpass leading to Farrer Park MRT station were also affected. In a media reply on Sept 3, SBS Transit spokeswoman Grace Wu said station staff assisted commuters while cleaners worked to dry the passageway.
