A fire broke out in an unoccupied accommodation block at the Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC) on Pulau Tekong on the afternoon of June 20.

The fire alarm was triggered at about 1.50pm that day, and the fire was extinguished by BMTC staff who heard the alarm and spotted the smoke, the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said in a statement on June 21.

No BMTC staff or trainees were injured, it said, adding that the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was also activated.

No one was in the affected bunk when the blaze started.

In a video of the aftermath of the fire uploaded to TikTok, the interior of the bunk appears heavily charred, with soot covering the walls and ceiling.

Mattresses are overturned, and the floor is wet. Exposed electrical wiring is visible in several areas.

The video caption said the fire broke out in the Viper company’s bunk.

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) is assisting the SCDF in investigating the cause of the fire.

Mindef said “the SAF remains committed to upholding high standards of fire safety to ensure a safe environment for our service personnel. As the investigation is ongoing, we are unable to provide further comments at this juncture”.
