A doctor at a Minneapolis hospital says staff are treating seven critically injured patients.
Speaking to the media, Dr Thomas Wyatt at Hennepin Healthcare Hospital says they received 11 patients, nine children and two adults. Four of the victims needed surgery, he adds.
He says he “can’t get into specifics” of the injuries but doctors are “dealing with gunshot wounds from a high-velocity weapon”.
“Gunshot wounds can be very problematic and require a lot of resources,” he says.
“But we see a lot of gunshot wounds here. We are used to seeing them.”
He adds: “Whenever that pager goes off it really puts into motion a big response from all the teams.
“We have to mobilise certain types of resources.
“There is a lot of planning and exercises we do throughout the year to prepare for these sorts of events.
“Unfortunately we respond to many of them throughout the year.”
