‘Hello, Greenland!’: Trump’s AI image reignites acquisition speculation amid US envoy visit

‘Hello, Greenland!’: Trump’s AI image reignites acquisition speculation amid US envoy visit

US President Donald Trump sparked discussion on his Truth Social platform as he shared an AI-generated image depicting him overlooking Greenland. This comes days after Louisiana’s Attorney General and US Special Envoy to Greenland, Jeff Landry’s visit to the island, which Denmark currently administers.

In a post on X, Landry said, “During our visit to Greenland, we had the opportunity to meet…a wide range of political and business leaders to discuss U.S.-Greenland cooperation on security, economic development, and shared strategic interests in the Arctic.”

Though it appears to be a visit to ensure strong bilateral ties with the island, President Trump’s actions might suggest a different story.

This incident makes it the most recent attempt to Trump’s wish of acquiring the island and making it part of the US. It is not the first time President Trump has expressed interest in the island. In 2019, he wanted “to buy” the semi-autonomous region partly governed by Denmark for strategic reasons, but Greenland’s leaders rejected it saying the island is not for sale.

Years later, after he was re-elected as President in January 2025, he intensified his attempts to make Greenland a territory of the US to defend against Russia and China. Trump also said that the US is the only country that could “protect, develop and improve Greenland”.

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has made it clear that the island will continue its historic ties with Denmark during a press conference held in Copenhagen.

Recently, people of Greenland had assembled outside the American Consulate in Nuuk to protest against the Trump administration’s move.

The US could attempt to annex Greenland, as during World War 2, the US had invaded Greenland to defend against Nazi Germany, and after the war ended, Denmark signed a defence agreement with Greenland that would let them build and maintain US Troops. Now, with this agreement standing, the US could increase stationing of troops on the island, order the military to take over control of Greenland and transfer power to the US government.

Trump has also made moves on other countries, like Venezuela, this year, as President Nicolas Maduro and his wife were transported to the US to face “multiple federal charges, including narco-terrorism and drug trafficking”.
