Is Trump secretly waiting to benefit from Mamdani’s New York City mayor race win?

Right after Zohran Mamdani was announced as New York City’s mayor-elect, he challenged U.S. President Donald Trump. In his victory speech, he said that he knew the president was watching and asked him to “turn up the volume.”

“The Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants,” Mamdani said.

Trump then posted a message on his Truth Social account saying, “TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,” according to Pollsters.

Later, he posted, “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”

Democrats swept the elections on Monday. Analysts say that, in contrast to Mamdani, many of the other Democratic candidates, like Virginia’s new Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger, had chosen to focus on policies considered to be more centrist, which would appeal to both Democrat and Republican voters. “Virginia chose pragmatism over partisanship,” Spanberger said, promising an emphasis on “problem-solving, not stoking division.”

During his Mayoral victory speech, Mamdani did not just target Trump, he also spoke against the leadership from his own party, saying that his leadership would be based on “a bold vision of what we will achieve, rather than a list of excuses for what we are too timid to attempt.”

“Convention has held us back. We have bowed at the altar of caution, and we have paid a mighty price. Too many working people cannot recognize themselves in our party, and too many among us have turned to the right for answers as to why they’ve been left behind,” he said.

Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez also spoke on how Mamdani’s victory went against not just Republicans but also against members of their own party who have been holding back on radical policies to appeal to conservative voters.

Analysts say that Mamdani’s win would lead to the more progressive side of the Democratic party using this opportunity to further implement more socialist policies, The Daily Mail reported.

Many Democratic leaders chose not to endorse Mamdani during his campaign, including former United States President Barack Obama and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer. The leaders seem to fear that Mamdani’s bold brand of left-wing politics will reflect on the entire party.

On a September 29 social media post, the Trump suggested that the mayor-elect could “prove to be one of the best things to ever happen to our great Republican Party.” The idea is that Mamdani’s victory would result in the Democrats suffering losses elsewhere in the country where socialist policies — which may be popular in New York City — do not catch on so well.
