Rush hour commuters hit by water gushing from Raffles Place MRT station platform ceiling

Posted on 17 September 2025 By jobuzo

Commuters at Raffles Place were met with water gushing from a dislodged panel in the station’s ceiling on the morning of Sept 17.

A video sent to Stomp shows water pooling on the station platform, with barricades placed around the affected areas.

The ground is also littered with newspapers.

A post on the subreddit r/singapore by user TheDoorDoesntWork at around 8am also included an image of the MRT platform.

The caption reads: “The poor MRT staff and cleaners were working hard to contain the situation. At least it seemed to be fresh water and the train worked fine.”

The incident follows a slew of train breakdowns in the month of September, with the most recent reports being a two-hour delay on the Thomson-East Coast Line on Sept 17, and disruptions on the East West Line between Aljunied and Tanah Merah on Sept 16.

Redditors lamented the increasing number of train-related incidents, with some claiming that the train system is “falling apart”.

One complained: “Got affected by the TEL disruption and had to go to Raffles Place to get the EWL instead. Saw the water pouring from the ceiling and wondered if I somehow ended up in New York today.”

In response to queries from The New Paper, SMRT said it is looking into the matter.
