Starmer will represent UK in Munich at ‘crucial time’ for world – as pressure grows on PM

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper has posted a message of support for Sir Keir Starmer on social media as he faces mounting pressure to resign.

Cooper says the prime minister “will lead our delegation to the Munich Security Conference” later this week.

“At this crucial time for the world, we need his leadership not just at home but on the global stage, and we need to keep our focus where it matters, on keeping our country safe,” she adds on social media.

Cooper’s support comes after Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar called for Starmer to step down as PM today, over his appointment of Peter Mandelson as UK ambassador to the US last year, despite his links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

The Munich meeting gets under way on Friday and will include 15 prime ministers and heads of state from the European Union as well as a large US delegation.

The war in Ukraine is likely to take centre stage during discussions, after Volodymyr Zelenskyy suggested at the weekend that the US wants a peace agreement wrapped up by June.
