American Idol is one of the most popular reality shows in television history. One reason for this is that the show is, at its best, both inspirational and aspirational. It’s very powerful to see unknown singers become famous before our very eyes, all thanks to their immense vocal talents. By the time someone wins, you’re very invested in their success because it feels like you’ve been part of their journey, from beginning to end.
Of course, some of us watch American Idol for a much simpler reason: the drama! The contestants and even the judges are often engaged in some of the pettiest, stupidest, and downright craziest drama we’ve ever seen on TV. Who are the biggest offenders? What are the wildest moments that will forever change how you see this iconic show? Keep reading to find out!
Backstage drama between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey

Early on in American Idol, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul were the most prominent and popular judges. Once they left, the show brought on several big names to replace them: Keith Urban, Mariah Carey, and Nicki Minaj. On paper, they were poised to become a powerhouse trio of popular judges. Unfortunately, that didn’t go to plan because Carey and Minaj couldn’t stop fighting!
Some fans noticed the tension between these two women during many of their onscreen interactions. Soon enough, the whole world noticed what was going on after TMZ released a behind-the-scenes video showing both of them fighting. “I told them I’m not [expletive] putting up with her [expletive] highness over there,” Minaj yelled, seemingly at Carey. “Oh, why, why do I have a 3-year-old sitting around me?” Carey replied. After this. Minaj said, “I’m gonna knock you out” before allegedly adding, “if I had a gun, I would shoot her.”
Nicki Minaj has since denied saying she would shoot Carey. As for Carey, she took the threat seriously and ended up hiring additional security. She later called appearing on American Idol the worst experience of her life. Neither she nor Minaj ever returned to the show.
Elton John called American Idol out for racism

Sadly, Elton John was never a major part of American Idol. But he did appear on some of the show’s third season, which gave him additional insight into how the show worked. He apparently didn’t like what he saw, though, and he wasted little time levying a major accusation at the producers by claiming that the show was racist.
According to the Los Angeles Times, John interrupted his own press conference in 2004 to discuss what he saw as racist voting practices on American Idol. “The three people I was really impressed with, and they just happened to be Black, young female singers, and they all seem to be landing in the bottom three,” he said. “They have great voices. The fact that they’re constantly in the bottom three — and I don’t want to set myself up here — but I find it incredibly racist.”
The women John was talking about were Fantasia Barrino, LaToya London, and Jennifer Hudson. It’s impossible to verify John’s claims of racism, and the Fox network declined to comment, but these women all ended up doing quite well for themselves. London became a successful solo R&B singer, and Hudson went on to earn an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony. As for Barrino, she became that season’s winner of American Idol!
