A former senior US trade official has given further reaction to the Supreme Court’s ruling.
Harry Broadman, former chief of staff for the White House Council of Economic Advisers, said the decision “could be a pivotal moment in US trade policy”.
“I thought his (Donald Trump’s) performance today at the news conference was interesting, and it was all over the place,” he told presenter Jonathan Samuels.
“And that’s the problem – the court really thought, ‘You have been taking a sawed-off shotgun approach, Mr. Trump – give us something that has precision and a substantive reason about the costs incurred by the US economy. Therefore, that suggests a tariff level of X, Y, and Z ‘.
“Maybe that was in the paperwork, but if it has, it certainly has not been made known.”
On the reaction of US businesses to the ruling, he added: “I think some of them are relieved, but I would not be relieved for the long run.”
