European nations have been summoning their respective Iranian ambassadors during the regime’s crackdown on protests in the country.
This afternoon, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper became the latest minister to summon her country’s Iranian ambassador (see 14.33 post).
“As the further reports have come through, the minister for the Middle East, at my instruction, has summoned the Iranian ambassador to underline the gravity of this moment and to call Iran to answer for the horrific reports that we are hearing,” she said.
Germany has also joined in making the move, adding that the “brutal actions of the Iranian regime against its own people are shocking”.
Italy’s foreign minister has also followed suit.
Meanwhile, Ireland has postponed a formal ceremony to give credentials for its new Iranian ambassador.
A spokesperson said the move follows concerns over the scale of violence against protesters and restrictions on information access.
Before that, France, the Netherlands, Finland and Spain were among the countries that announced they were summoning their Iranian ambassadors too (see 11.49 post).
