The US has imposed sanctions on the “architects of the Iranian regime’s brutal crackdown on peaceful demonstrators”.

In a statement, the US Treasury Department also said it was taking action against the shadow banking networks that “allow Iran’s elite to steal and launder revenue generated by the country’s natural resources”.

“The United States stands firmly behind the Iranian people in their call for freedom and justice,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said.

He added that “at the direction of President Trump”, the department is sanctioning “key Iranian leaders involved” in the crackdown on protesters, and it will “use every tool to target those behind the regime’s oppression”.

Among those Iranian officials being sanctioned are the secretary of the Supreme Council for National Security and “18 individuals and entities who play critical roles in laundering the proceeds of Iranian petroleum and petrochemical sales to foreign markets”.
