US hits Russia's biggest oil firms with sanctions

US hits Russia’s biggest oil firms with sanctions

That’s it for our live coverage today on the war in Ukraine.

Speaking at the White House in the last half an hour, Donald Trump said he cancelled a proposed summit with Vladimir Putin because it ‘didn’t feel right’, but insisted talks will be held ‘in the future’.

The US president also said he hoped new sanctions on Russia announced this evening, including on its two largest oil producers Rosneft and Lukoil, would push Putin to “become reasonable” in talks to end the war in Ukraine, as he hosted NATO chief Mark Rutte in Washington.

The US Treasury Department said the sanctions were imposed due to Russia’s “lack of serious commitment to a peace process”, and would “degrade the Kremlin’s ability to raise revenue for its war machine and support its weakened economy”.

It came after top officials in the Kremlin said Russia was still preparing for a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Ahead of his meeting with Trump, Rutte told our US correspondent David Blevins that his trip to the US did not mean Trump’s meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy last week was a “disaster”.

Elsewhere, Zelenskyy earlier said that Trump’s plan for Ukraine and Russia to stop at the conflict’s current frontlines was a “good compromise”.

On a visit to Sweden, Ukraine’s president Zelenskyy signed a declaration of intent for the Nordic nation to provide its Saab-made Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said they were in talks to sell between 100 and 150 of the fighter jets to Ukraine, with Zelenskyy expressing his aim to start using them next year.
