Volcano erupts after huge quake hits Russia – as tsunami alerts downgraded

Posted on 30 July 2025 By jobuzo

It’s just after 1pm in the UK, around 12 hours since the 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck in Russia’s far east.

Here’s everything you need to know.

‘Not seen a wave of consequence’

After initial fears of the severity of tsunamis triggered by the massive earthquake – the sixth-biggest on record – many countries are now downgrading their warnings and alerts.

Fears of massive waves destroying coastal regions have not manifested in many areas.

Parts of Russia, especially the Kamchatka Peninsula, where the epicentre was, and the nearby Kiril Islands, were badly hit and saw some injuries, with four-metre waves hitting the land.

But regional authorities in both areas have since downgraded the tsunami warnings.

In the US, the first tsunami waves hit Hawaii around 7am UK time, later hitting California and Washington state.

However, around an hour later, Hawaii’s governor said the island state had “not seen a wave of consequence”.

The evacuation was later lifted, but officials were quick to urge people to remain cautious and not assume all danger had passed.

Fukushima nuclear plant evacuated

Japan and the Philippines both issued tsunami warnings as well.

Japan suffered a major nuclear accident after a 2011 earthquake and subsequent tsunami led to more than 18,000 deaths and nuclear waste being leaked into the water.

Operations in the country’s nuclear plants along its Pacific coast were suspended and the Fukushima plant – badly hit in 2011 – was evacuated, but the international nuclear watchdog confirmed it had no reports of damage and Japan has since lifted all its tsunami warnings.

The Philippines has also eased its alerts.

Outside of Russia, there have been no reports of injuries.

‘Precautionary measure’

While it seems the worst has passed for many, officials in multiple countries were quick to urge people not to assume there was no longer any danger.

Similarly, some low-lying islands still face a threat from the tsunami.

French Polynesia authorities warned that the Marquesas Islands could see four-metre waves and that they had put soldiers on alert as a “precautionary measure”.
