Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday urged the US side to respect China’s core interests and uphold the one-China principle.

Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks during a meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Manila, the Philippines.

Noting that this is a pivotal year for China-US relations, Wang said the two heads of state held a successful and historic meeting in Beijing, agreeing on a vision of building a constructive China-US relationship of strategic stability and outlining the direction for joint efforts.

This represents significant progress made by the two major countries in exploring a path of peaceful coexistence, serves the fundamental interests of both peoples and meets the shared expectations of the international community, said Wang.

“Our responsibility now is to follow the course charted by the two heads of state, remove distractions and overcome obstacles to ensure that the consensus reached by the leaders is translated into consensus and action across the entire government and all sectors, promote global peace through China-US strategic stability and provide major momentum for international cooperation through constructive bilateral interaction,” he said.

Wang also stated China’s solemn position regarding a series of recent negative remarks and actions by the US side, urging the US to properly manage differences and address China’s legitimate concerns.
