The victim of a shooting in Burnaby is now suspected to have been killed in an escalating gang warfare in British Columbia, Canada. The Canadian Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) has now identified the victim of the January 22 shooting as 28-year-old Dilraj Singh Gill, an Indian origin man from Vancouver.
Investigators believed that he was killed in a targeted attack.
The shooting had happened shortly before 5:30 pm (local time) on January 22, near the 3700 block of Canada Way, Burnaby, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.
Officers who responded to reports of gunfire found a male victim suffering from critical injuries and pronounced him dead on the scene.
Officials said that the man was known to the police. He reportedly had associations with organised crime groups.
Police are investigating the homicide case in relation to the escalating gang violence in the region.
Gill had a history of drug related conviction, starting from 2021 when he was sentenced for trafficking offences relating to a 2018 arrest in North Vancouver. Police found cash, crack cocaine, and a heroin-fentanyl mix at the site.
He has also fled police and had additional trafficking charges added. Gill’s murder is also believed to be linked to the recent killing of Navpreet Dhaliwal in Abbotsford, according to sources who spoke to the Vancouver Sun.
Dhilawal had alleged ties to the Brothers Keepers gang and was given a public police warning.
Investigators are now seeking dash cam footage from the Canada Way and Buxton Street areas to aid the investigation.
