August 5 will be a public holiday for Bangladesh, the country’s interim government has confirmed. Tuesday will be observed as ‘July Uprising Day’, and a Cabinet Department notification stated that August 5 has been included as a category ‘A’ day in the circular on the observance of national and international days.

All banks in the country will be closed on Tuesday, according to a circular issued by the Supervision Department of Bangladesh Bank.

According to Bangladeshi media reports, on June 25, the Cabinet Division had announced that August 5 was declared “July Mass Uprising Day”, marking the fall of the Awami League government during a student-public revolt. It also declared August 8 as “New Bangladesh Day”, commemorating the formation of the interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus after the Awami League’s fall.

While the decision to declare 5 August a national holiday was announced on Wednesday, 2 July, in a Cabinet Department notification, the decision had already been made in a previous meeting of the interim government’s advisory council, reports said.
