Europe ‘projects weakness’, says top US official – as allies warn Trump against Greenland tariffs

Posted on 18 January 2026 By jobuzo

US Treasury secretary Scott Bessent has been speaking to our US partner network NBC News after Donald Trump’s tariff threat over Greenland.

He’s asked by NBC’s Kristen Welker how any move that sees the US take Greenland by force would differ to Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

“I believe that the Europeans will understand that this is best for Greenland, best for Europe and best for the United States,” he replied.

He went on to say that Trump “strongly believes we cannot outsource our security”.

“This fight for the Arctic is real, we would keep our NATO guarantees and if there were an attack on Russia, or from some other area, we would get dragged in,” he said.

“Europeans project weakness, US projects strength.”

Asked whether US military action is still on the table, Bessent said he hasn’t had that discussion with Trump.

“Again, I believe that the Europeans will understand that the best outcome is for the US to maintain or receive control of Greenland,” he added.
