Man arrested as lorry driver dies after Kallang hit-and-run

A 33-year-old man was arrested after he was involved in a hit-and-run accident on Aug 20 which led to the death of a lorry driver.

The man, who was driving a car, was arrested for dangerous driving causing death, said the police on Aug 26.

The man had been involved in an accident with a lorry in Kallang – at the junction of King George’s Avenue and Lavender Street – on the night of Aug 20. He had left the scene before the arrival of the police.

The police said a 57-year-old male lorry driver was taken unconscious to the hospital, where he subsequently died.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force had earlier said the lorry driver was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

The Straits Times has contacted the police for more details.

Police investigations are ongoing.

In a video of the accident posted on Facebook page Singapore Roads Accident.com, a lorry can be seen at the junction with a crack on its front window and debris scattered around the vehicle. Nearby, a car is seen with its bonnet crumpled.

The number of traffic accidents that led to fatalities increased by 6.1 per cent, from 131 cases in 2023 to 139 cases, in 2024, according to figures released by the police on Feb 21. The number of fatalities increased by 4.4 per cent, from 136 persons in 2023 to 142 persons in 2024.
